Collaboration can be challenging, perhaps, frustrating, when attempting to bring individuals with diverse experiences, work habits, and perspectives together on a project. However, when artist Nancy L. Smith and writer/photographer Anne Anthony teamed up, magic transpired. Their vision to celebrate women through an art and literary collaboration was magnificent. Nancy invited writers to submit poems and prose that reflected her mixed media collages of the female form, which generated insightful and memorable writing. I can only imagine how difficult it was for the judges to select the winning pieces.
I was honored to have my poem, “Altered Silhouette,” selected to reflect Nancy’s collage, “Twilight Reflection.” My poem about breast cancer and a lumpectomy was somewhat autobiographical.
If you did not have the opportunity to attend the WOMEN SPEAK Exhibit held at the Frank Community Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC on the weekend of March 9th, 2019, you can watch the video of the author readings, as well as view Nancy’s artwork, at Women Speak on Nancy’s website. Participating in this event was a unique and wonderful experience for which I am very grateful. Also, the artwork and writing are compiled in an attractive bound edition entitled Women Speak, Portraits, Poetry, and Prose of the Feminine Experience, which is available for purchase on Nancy’s website. You will not regret purchasing this beautiful tribute to women.
